REACTIVE RESPONSE TO PROACTIVE ROAD SAFETY: FRSC AND IBEJU-LEKKI COUNCIL DEEPEN COLLABORATION

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has strengthened its partnership with the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government as both institutions move towards a more proactive approach to road safety management.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has strengthened its partnership with the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government as both institutions move towards a more proactive approach to road safety management and traffic discipline across the area.

This development followed a courtesy visit by the newly deployed FRSC Commander, Mr. K. A. Adewale, to the Executive Chairman, Hon. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, at the Council Secretariat, where discussions focused on shifting attention from reactive interventions to preventive measures capable of reducing road risks before they escalate.

During the engagement, the FRSC highlighted key safety concerns along the Ibeju Long Bridge, particularly the need to ensure proper drainage flow and uninterrupted water passage to maintain safe driving conditions along the corridor. The Corps also drew attention to the activities of overloaded tipper trucks within the axis, noting that spillage from excess materials continues to create avoidable hazards for motorists and contributes to road safety risks.

In his response, Hon. Olowa disclosed that the local government is already mobilizing efforts to remove accumulated sand along the Ibeju Long Bridge using a bobcat, adding that the operation will require coordinated traffic control support from the FRSC to ensure safety throughout the exercise. He further expressed concern over increasing cases of reckless driving and traffic indiscipline within the local government, stressing that sustained enforcement and stricter consequences for repeat offenders are necessary to deter violations and promote safer road behaviour.

The Chairman emphasized that the growing population and economic activity in Ibeju-Lekki demand a stronger culture of law and order on the roads, noting that the focus must extend beyond response to prevention through consistent enforcement and behavioural correction.

Both institutions aligned on a joint approach that combines enforcement, infrastructure support, and continuous engagement to drive lasting improvements in road safety across Ibeju-Lekki.
