Following constructive engagements with dredging operators and relevant stakeholders, the Executive Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, Hon. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa has lifted the temporary suspension placed on dredging activities across the council area, as operators commit to responsible practices, Omu Creek dredging, and improved road infrastructure around their operational areas.
The development followed a strategic meeting between the Chairman and representatives of the Dredgers Association, aimed at addressing concerns arising from the impact of dredging activities on flooding, public infrastructure, and host communities across Ibeju-Lekki.
The engagement came after the recent joint inspection conducted by the Local Government and officials of the Lagos State Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources at major dredging locations, including Bogije, Lagasa, and Awoyaya, where the environmental and infrastructural impact of dredging activities was assessed.
Speaking during the meeting, Hon. Olowa explained that the temporary suspension was necessary to allow for proper assessment of dredging operations and to ensure that economic activities within the sector are carried out responsibly and sustainably.
The Chairman emphasized that the Local Government is not opposed to legitimate business activities, stressing that the administration's priority is to create an environment where businesses can thrive while protecting residents, communities, and public infrastructure.
He noted that the dredging industry remains an important part of the local economy, but operators must also recognize their responsibilities to host communities by supporting the maintenance of roads, waterways, and other infrastructure affected by their activities.
Hon. Olowa stressed that sustainable development requires cooperation among government, businesses, and communities, describing the relationship between the Local Government, host communities, and the dredging industry as a partnership that must be strengthened through dialogue and shared responsibility.
Responding, representatives of the Dredgers Association appreciated the Chairman for the engagement and reaffirmed their commitment to working closely with the Local Government in addressing concerns and promoting responsible dredging operations.
As part of the resolutions reached, the dredging operators agreed to undertake the dredging of shallow sections of Omu Creek to facilitate improved water inflow and enhance navigability. They also committed to supporting a phased improvement of road infrastructure leading to dredging sites through collaborative efforts with the Local Government.
The engagement concluded with both parties reaffirming their commitment to responsible dredging practices, environmental sustainability, infrastructure protection, and continued economic growth across Ibeju-Lekki.
