The Executive Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, Hon. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa on Wednesday 8th July, 2026 led a comprehensive flood response tour across communities impacted by recent heavy rainfall, undertaking on the spot assessments of affected areas and directing immediate interventions aimed at protecting lives, restoring access, strengthening drainage infrastructure and preventing a recurrence of flooding.
The exercise, which lasted several hours, saw the Chairman move from one community to another alongside relevant officials of the Local Government, inspecting flood affected roads, blocked drainage channels, canals, culverts and other critical infrastructure while issuing immediate directives to address identified challenges.
The tour covered _Eluju, Eleko, Solu, Solu Alade, Alahun, Desa, Bogije, Abule Pan, Lagasa, Eputu Canal, Bolunrupelu, the Container axis in Awoyaya and Beachwood Estate,_ with every location receiving careful attention based on the unique drainage and environmental challenges identified during the exercise.
The tour resulted in a number of immediate interventions across the Local Government, beginning with _Bogije Community,_ where the Chairman inspected the dredging site whose overflow, occasioned by the recent incessant rainfall, has been linked to the flooding experienced within the community.
Following an on the spot assessment and briefings from relevant officials, Hon. Olowa ordered the immediate closure of the dredging operation, describing the protection of lives and property as the overriding priority of the Local Government. He directed that the necessary enforcement measures be taken immediately while further assessments and remedial actions are carried out to mitigate the effects of the flooding and prevent a recurrence.
Moving to _Abule Pan,_ the Chairman inspected sections of the road severely affected by floodwater and approved immediate emergency road stabilisation works to restore access for residents and motorists. He explained that the intervention forms part of a phased response designed to improve mobility in the short term while comprehensive plans are concluded for a permanent solution to the affected corridor.
_At Lagasa_, the inspection revealed the urgent need for additional drainage infrastructure to accommodate increased stormwater discharge. Based on the findings at the site, Hon. Olowa approved the construction of a reinforced drainage culvert to improve water flow, reduce flooding and provide a durable solution capable of serving the growing community.
The Chairman also visited _Eputu Canal,_ where accumulated silt and debris were found to be restricting the free movement of water. He immediately directed the deployment of maintenance teams to commence manual desilting of the canal, describing the exercise as an important intervention to restore the canal's carrying capacity while broader drainage improvement measures are developed.
At the _Container axis in Awoyaya, _where drainage deficiencies have continued to affect residents and commuters, Hon. Olowa reviewed the completed design for a new culvert prepared specifically for the corridor. Satisfied with the proposed solution, he confirmed that the project has been awarded to _O2S Construction_, with physical construction scheduled to commence on Thursday. He expressed confidence that the project will significantly improve stormwater evacuation, preserve the integrity of the road and enhance traffic movement within the area.
Beyond the major intervention sites, the Chairman undertook detailed assessments in _Eluju, Eleko, Solu, Solu Alade, Alahun, Desa, Bolunrupelu and Beachwood Estate,_ where he identified additional flood flashpoints, inspected existing drainage infrastructure and directed the appropriate departments to prioritise maintenance works, channel improvements and other interventions required to strengthen flood resilience across the affected communities.
The Chairman reaffirmed that his administration remains committed to responding swiftly to infrastructure challenges through proactive planning, timely interventions and sustainable solutions that protect lives, safeguard investments and improve the quality of life for residents. He noted that as Ibeju-Lekki continues to witness rapid growth and development, strengthening drainage infrastructure and improving flood resilience will remain a priority of his administration.
He further appealed to residents, developers and businesses to support government efforts by ensuring proper environmental practices, avoiding indiscriminate refuse disposal into drainage channels and complying with regulations designed to preserve natural waterways and public infrastructure.
