The Executive Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, Hon. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, on Wednesday 15th July, 2026 received the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, who was accompanied by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, and the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, during an inspection visit to the flood-affected Gbetu-Iwerekun community in Ibeju-Lekki.

The visit formed part of the Lagos State Government's ongoing assessment of flood-prone areas across the state following the recent heavy rainfall, with the aim of identifying immediate and long-term interventions required to improve drainage infrastructure, enhance water flow and reduce the impact of flooding on residents and communities.

During the inspection, Hon. Olowa led the Governor and his delegation through the affected areas, providing an overview of the flooding situation, its impact on residents, motorists and economic activities, as well as the environmental characteristics of the community that contribute to the challenges experienced during periods of intense rainfall.

Speaking during the inspection, Governor Sanwo-Olu explained that the flooding experienced across parts of Lagos in recent weeks was a result of both natural occurrences and human factors. He noted that the volume of rainfall recorded across the state over the last two to three weeks was largely a natural occurrence, stressing that nature will always take its course.

The Governor stated that the reduction in rainfall over the past few days provided an opportunity for the State Government to physically assess affected communities and determine areas requiring additional drainage improvements, clear water channels and further investments to strengthen flood management infrastructure.

According to him, his decision to visit communities such as Gbetu-Iwerekun was deliberate, as it was important to move beyond the metropolitan areas and personally observe the natural outflow of floodwaters while gaining a better understanding of the realities faced by residents.

Governor Sanwo-Olu assured residents that the Lagos State Government is not unmindful of their concerns, adding that all necessary corrective measures identified during the inspection would be implemented to improve drainage systems, manage water flow and protect lives and property.

He further appealed to residents to support government efforts by protecting drainage infrastructure and avoiding activities that obstruct the free flow of water, noting that effective flood management requires collective responsibility.

The inspection reaffirmed the continued collaboration between the Lagos State Government and Ibeju-Lekki Local Government in addressing environmental challenges and delivering sustainable infrastructure solutions that improve the wellbeing of residents.
