LAGOS STATE GOVERNMENT, IBEJU-LEKKI LG FLAG OFF ELECTRONIC BIRTH REGISTRATION PROGRAMME; NURSING MOTHERS. SENSITIZED ON LIFELONG BENEFITS

The Lagos State Government, in partnership with the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government under the leadership of Hon. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, today officially flagged off the Electronic Birth Registration (e-Birth) Programme at the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Secretariat. The initiative, aims to ensure every child born in the Council Area receives a digital birth certificate within stipulated days of delivery. The flag-off ceremony was led by the Vice Chairman, Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, Hon. Isiaka Yusuf Olatunji who represented Hon. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa. While declaring the flag off, the Vice Chairman underscored the transformative impact of the programme, as he emphasized that a birth certificate is more than a document, it is a child’s first right, opening doors to education, healthcare, and future opportunities. He therefore called on all those present to spread the information to all residents within the communities. Nursing mothers from across the 7 wards of Ibeju-Lekki were sensitized during the event on the critical importance of timely birth registration. Dr. Sosanya Taiwo, the Medical Officer for Health, Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, highlighted how e-birth registration eliminates bureaucratic delays, prevents identity fraud, and supports data-driven planning for maternal and child health services. “With this e-birth registration, stored in the cloud, it will be easy for care-givers to track their children’s certificate”, he said. Mrs. Owolomose, Head of Field Operations for Ibeju-Lekki, demonstrated the seamless process as parents can now register their newborns on-site using biometric enabled tablets with information on either parent’s National Identity Number (NIN), immunization card A birth certificate is not just a piece of paper. It is a fundamental human right, a tool for inclusion, and a foundation for national development. With e-birth registration, the vicious cycle of getting the manual birth registration document is broken.
