IBEJU-LEKKI LG SWIFTLY ADDRESSES WASTE ACCUMULATION AT KAYETORO MARKET, DIRECTIVES ISSUED FOR SUSTAINED SANITATION

In line with the Executive Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, Hon. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa's commitment to a cleaner and healthier environment, the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government has conducted a targeted environmental inspection at Kiayetoro Market, resulting in immediate action plans to evacuate accumulated waste and enforce better sanitation practices. Hon. Ogungbo Temitope Sofwan, Supervisor for Environment and Waste Management, led the inspection on Monday 23rd March, 2026 following resident and trader reports of excessive refuse buildup in a section of the market. The visit forms part of the Local Government’s ongoing proactive campaign to maintain high standards of sanitation, waste control, and environmental compliance across all markets and communities. The inspection team observed significant accumulations of household refuse, nylon materials, plastic containers, organic waste, and other pollutants improperly disposed of in the affected area. These conditions posed notable health and environmental risks to traders, nearby residents, and road users. Hon. Ogungbo Temitope Sofwan personally evaluated the site with his environmental team and on-ground stakeholders. He stressed the urgency of waste evacuation and the importance of sustained market maintenance to prevent further degradation and safeguard public health. Following the inspection, market leaders, including the Iyaloja and Babaloja of Kiayetoro Market, along with the OPC Coordinator, promptly engaged with the Supervisor as they acknowledged the challenge and committed to immediate resolution. Directives issued by the Supervisor were: Regular environmental sanitation exercises to be upheld by market stakeholders. Adoption of proper waste disposal methods by all traders and market users. Ongoing collaboration between market leaders, OPC, and Local Government environmental officers to monitor compliance. Strict enforcement of environmental sanitation regulations to prevent any recurrence.
