IBEJU-LEKKI LG INTENSIFIES ENVIRONMENTAL SANITATION AND PUBLIC SPACE ENFORCEMENT ACROSS LAKOWE, LOSORO, OGUNFAYO AND AWOYAYA

Environmental sanitation and public space enforcement remained firmly in motion on Monday, 5 January 2026, as officials of the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government carried out coordinated monitoring and enforcement exercises across Lakowe and Losoro, Ogunfayo, and Awoyaya communities. The operation, led by the Local Government’s Environmental and Waste Management teams, covered residential areas, commercial zones, major markets and pedestrian corridors where indiscriminate waste disposal and obstruction of public spaces continue to pose environmental, health and safety concerns. During the exercise, several drainages were found severely blocked with large volumes of household refuse, plastic waste, bottles and other debris, creating stagnant water, foul odour and visible environmental degradation. In some locations, the blocked drainages were situated directly in front of residential buildings, leaving pools of dirty water and waste at the entrance of homes. This posed serious risks to residents, including flooding, disease exposure and damage to surrounding structures, clearly showing how indiscriminate dumping directly affects living conditions within communities. In Lakowe and Losoro, the enforcement team also observed a particularly disturbing situation where a drainage channel recently constructed by the Local Government had already been heavily filled with refuse. The level of waste dumped into the drainage showed clear disregard for public infrastructure and environmental safety, threatening to render the new facility ineffective even before it fully serves its purpose of flood control and proper water flow. Officials described the situation as unacceptable and warned that continued dumping into government-built drainages would attract strict enforcement measures. At the Awoyaya Market area, traders found selling goods on pedestrian walkways and road setbacks were directed to vacate such spaces immediately. Officials emphasized that walkways are designated strictly for pedestrian use and that trading activities obstructing free movement and public order will not be tolerated. Compliance was enforced to restore order and safety within the busy market environment. The enforcement team also inspected premises across Lakowe, Losoro, Ogunfayo and Awoyaya, cautioning residents and business operators against dumping refuse into drainages, setbacks and unauthorised points. The Local Government reiterated that environmental sanitation and public space enforcement in Ibeju-Lekki is continuous and not a one-off exercise. This enforcement exercise reflects the firm and uncompromising stance of the administration of Hon. (Engr.) Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, Executive Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, whose SHIEELD Agenda places strong priority on Environment as a core pillar of governance. The Chairman has made it clear that acts of indiscriminate waste disposal, abuse of public infrastructure and obstruction of public spaces will not be tolerated under his watch. Environmental degradation poses direct risks to public health, safety and infrastructure, and this administration will continue to apply strict enforcement measures to protect communities and preserve government investments across Ibeju-Lekki. In line with this position, the Local Government urged all residents across Ibeju-Lekki to take responsibility for proper waste disposal, respect public infrastructure and pedestrian spaces, and comply fully with environmental laws, noting that sanitation and public space enforcement will remain active across all communities as part of the administration’s commitment to a cleaner, safer and healthier Ibeju-Lekki.
