HON.OLOWA CALLS ON MARKET TRADERS FOR INCREASED CIVIC RESPONSIBILITIES

(Prince) Ahmed Ajibola Elemoro, Holds Inaugural Meeting with Stakeholders* In a bid to foster better collaboration and improve market operations, the Supervisor for Market and Revenue in Ibeju-Lekki Local Council Development Area, Hon. Ahmed Ajibola Elemoro, today Thursday 26th March, 2026 convened an inaugural meeting with market stakeholders and traders across the council area. During the meeting, Hon. Elemoro highlighted the vision of the Executive Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki LGA, Hon. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, for the development of well-planned and organised markets that will enhance trading activities and boost the local economy. He emphasised the need for traders to maintain proper records by establishing a comprehensive file system in their respective markets for effective documentation and accountability. Hon. Elemoro also charged the traders to remain committed to the prompt payment of their revenues, stressing that revenue generation remains the primary source of funds for the government to execute developmental projects that directly benefit the markets and the entire council area. In the same vein, the Supervisor for Environment and Waste Management, Hon. Ogungbo Temitope Sofwan, urged market traders to strictly comply with environmental sanitation guidelines. He led by example, demonstrating the use of a nose mask and specifically charged food vendors to adopt the same practice, noting that the food they sell is meant for human consumption and must not pose any health risk to the public. Hon. Ogungbo drew attention to the poor state of gutters in some markets and called on all traders to take environmental sanitation seriously. He declared that Ibeju-Lekki LGA is determined to take the lead in this Saturday’s statewide sanitation exercise across all communities in the council. The Council Manager, Mr. Adegoke, advised the traders to diligently perform their civic responsibilities, avoid forming factions within the markets, and instead operate as a strong, united body. He warned against allowing people to sleep overnight in the markets, stating that the State Government frowns at the practice as it could serve as a breeding ground for criminal elements. In her response, the Iyaloja General, Alhaja Elemoro, assured the government representatives of strict compliance with revenue payment and environmental sanitation rules going forward. She, however, appealed for government support in addressing the challenge of illegal traders who sell on pedestrian walkways, obstructing free movement. In closing, Hon. Ahmed Ajibola Elemoro affirmed that a Market Monitoring Team (MMT) will soon be deployed to monitor compliance and fish-out any culprits who fall short of the laid-down rules and regulations. The meeting ended on a cordial note with renewed commitment from all parties to work together for the development of organised, clean, and prosperous markets in Ibeju-Lekki. Also present were, Hon.
