OPINION: THE 2024 IBEJU-LLEKKI FLOOD MANAGEMENT PROJECT

As we reflect on the devastating floods that have affected some areas in Ibeju-Lekki Local Govt, it’s clear that both the government and citizens must take proactive steps to address the root causes. Floods may be temporary, but their impact can be devastating and long-lasting, claiming lives and properties. It’s crucial that we learn from past experiences and work together to prevent such occurrences. The Ibeju-Lekki’s massive waterway project, under the leadership of Hon. (Engr) Abdullah Sesan Olowa, the Executive Chairman Of Ibeju-lLekki Local Govt, in about 15 communities, including Shapati, Oke-odo, Elemoro, Gbetu, Lakowe Phase 1, Lakowe Town, Bogije, Desa, Olupa, Araromi, Iba road, Oke’Keji, Iberekodo, Eleko, Badore, Idado, Debojo and others, is a step in the right direction. This project aims to enhance water flow, reduce sedimentation, and mitigate flooding. To effectively manage floods, the government must: – Establish a town planning department to oversee building constructions and ensure proper drainage systems. – Implement strict laws to prevent indiscriminate dumping of refuse and punish offenders. – Encourage citizens to utilize authorized waste management services like KEKE Jaja. – Enforce building regulations and ensure structures are built in approved areas with necessary permits. – Conduct public awareness campaigns ahead of the rainy season to educate citizens on flood preparedness and prevention. – Hold offenders accountable for building in illegal and unapproved areas. Community Development Associations (CDAs) must also be revitalized to work collaboratively with the government to ensure a clean and conducive environment. Together, we can make a difference and build a better future for our community. Let’s be law-abiding citizens, cooperate with the government, and work together to prevent and minimize flood impact. The government’s response to flooding can alleviate suffering, but lost lives and property can’t be fully restored. Let’s act now! Asiwaju K.O Ligali
