IBEJU-LEKKI LOCAL GOVERNMENT

COMMUNIQUÉ ISSUED AT THE END OF THE MEETING OF THE TRAFFIC TASKFORCE CONSISTING OF IBEJU-LEKKI LOCAL GOVERNMENT, CRANEBURG AND SECURITY AGENCIES ON CURBING TRAFFIC SITUATIONS ON THE LEKKI-EPE EXPRESSWAY HELD AT THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT SECRETARIAT, IGANDO-OLOJA ON THURSDAY, 5TH OCTOBER, 2023.

PREAMBLE:

The incessant traffic situation and onforeseen accidents along the Lekki-Epe Expressway where the second phase of the road construction by Craneburg Company is ongoing is becoming alarming and needs prompt and drastic measures to avert recording unpleasant incidents due to reckless driving and unauthorised activities on the road.

Despite the efforts of Craneburg, Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, Security and Traffic Agencies, a strict measure must be taken as soon as possible to facilitate the completion of the project without interferences from benefitting communities and others road users.

RESOLUTION:
It was unanimously agreed by major stakeholders at the meeting consisting of the Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government and other Council Officials, Craneburg Project Manager – Lagos and Officials of the company, Representatives of the Federal Road Safety Corp, Representatives of The Nigerian Police, Elemoro Division, LASTMA Officials, Representative of LSNC, Traffic Managers Constituted by the Local Government amongst others resolved that

1) A Joint Taskforce should be constituted and inaugurated to oversee and enforce several measures to be deployed to curb the traffic menaces.

2) It was also agreed that reflective and cautionary signage with logos of the three major players, Craneburg, Ibeju-Lekki and Lagos State be produced and placed at locations designated as bus stops in the road design and other areas where construction is still ongoing. This is to guide road users and commercial buses on where passengers can board and alight from buses .

3) Drastic measures should also be taking to stop the mechanical repair of vehicles on the road by roadside mechanics, driving against the traffic and Ilegal parking and other traffic anomaly perpetrated by road users.

Punitive measures to be introduced include :

A) Removal of Plate Numbers of vehicles illegally parked on the road verges

B) Payment of fines or prosecution as deterrent to stop the traffic ills amongst others.

4) The meeting also resolved to create a temporary yard to keep impounded vehicle by the Joint Taskforce to support the effectiveness and efficiency of the operation.

5) Alahun Tipper Garage may be relocated due to the allege criminal activities taking place at the Garage. A meeting between security agencies, Local Government and the Union will be called shortly to discuss these issues

6) Massive Awareness and enlightenment Campaign through Radio and other means of communication and information dissemination should be embarked upon to inform the public on traffic situations, impediments and prohibitions that would help in reducing traffic Gridlock and restore sanity.

7) It was also suggested that a stakeholders meeting should be organised to inform opinion leaders, Obas, Baales, CDAs, Market Men and Women of the decision and activities of the Taskforce to eliminate any clash of interests.

8) At the end of the meeting, the gathering agreed that an official letter should be written to the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation to inform their office of the activities of the Traffic Taskforce to be Inaugurated in accordance with the Lagos State Traffic Law permitting Local Government to handle such in Collaboration with relevant authorities.
