The condition of the Eco System is the determinant of the quality of human life. There is, therefore, the need to protect it from being contaminated by environmental degradation and nuisances to promote healthy living.
It was on this premise that the Year 2023 World Environmental Day was kick started yesterday Monday 5th June, 2023 in Epe Division in collaboration with the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, Office of Environmental Services at the Epe Recreation Centre.

This year’s Environmental Day with the theme “Solution To Plastic Pollution” is centered on how to tackle the menace of plastic wastes that has taken over the centre stage of waste generated in Lagos State.

In his address, the Managing Director of LAWMA, Mr. Ibrahim Adejuwon Odumboni who represented His Excellency, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, the Executive Governor of Lagos State, implored residents to collaborate with the Government in imbibing the culture of recycling plastic wastes and making money out of the process thereby improving on the environmental condition as well as boosting the economy of the State.

A Director of the Department of Monitoring, Enforcement and Compliance of the Ministry, Mr. Fasasi Abolaji, who represented the Permanent Secretary in tune with other speakers at the programme also emphasized on the economic benefits of recycling of plastics on the environment while hinting on high risk of environmental pollution caused by plastic burning and it’s effect on human health.

Various solutions of curbing this problem were proffered by experts at the event which includes reduction of plastic production,picking of plastics,reuse of plastics,total recycling into other micro products among other ways.

The Executive Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, Hon. (Engr.) Abdullahi Sesan Olowa acknowledging this year’s World Environmental Day Celebration reiterated his commitment and that of his Administration in ensuring a cleaner council area through total eradication of indiscriminate dumping of plastics through massive advocacy on reuse and recycling of plastics within the Local Government Area to support the efforts of the State Government.

Various displays was presented by Students to showcase by products of recycled plastics and its advantages.

Also at the occasion were Vice Chairmen and Supervisors for Environment in Epe Division, HOD, Environmental Services of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government, Mrs Bolanle Anjorin (San.), Environmental,
Health, LAWMA and KAI Officials, people of the Division amongst others.
